Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of undesired gifts could be considered a little discourteous – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Sale
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The eclectic collection could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
The presents, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline has not been finalized, although the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the revenue going to various charities.
Palazzo Chigi Holdings
These gifts reportedly kept in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.
A complete inventory remains disclosed, but partial details emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The question centered on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.
An International Array of Gifts
The collection includes:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- An assortment including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Diplomatic Context
